SUMMARY:Dan Fountain's "He Went Down with His Ship: Captain Burke and the Steamer Arlington"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Marquette Maritime Museum for this exciting new shipwreck discovery at our March Maritime History on Tap.\n\nIn the summer of 2023\, a group of local shipwreck hunters\, including Marquette Maritime Museum board member Dan Fountain\, set out on Lake Superior in search of the famous “ghost ship” of the Great Lakes\, the steamer Bannockburn. They succeeded in finding an intact steel steamer in deep water near the middle of the lake and reached out to the Great Lakes Shipwreck Historical Society (GLSHS) for help in identifying a potential wreck. The GLSHS’s David Boyd towed a Marine Sonic Technology side-scan sonar over the anomaly and the wreck revealed its identity as the Arlington\, sunk in a storm in 1940. The wreck has tales to tell of rescue by a nearby freighter\, the first trip on the lake for two young deckhands\, and the veteran captain who didn’t (or couldn’t?) abandon ship and went down to a watery grave.\n\nDan Fountain presents “He Went Down with His Ship: Captain Burke and the Steamer Arlington\,” March 5\, 7:00pm\, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. $5 suggested donation at the door. Nardos Osterhart will be making her GRPM debut with an impressive resume including the title of Funniest Person in Grand Rapids in 2013.\nTickets are $25\, with a reduced price of $20 each for GRPM members. Tickets are available now at tickets.grpm.org/events. will Doors open at 6 p.m. with the show beginning at 7 p.m. Cash bars will be available.\n\nDave Dyer Van Slooten has been performing stand-up at comedy clubs\, theaters\, and corporate events for over twenty-five years. He’s worked with some of the best comics in the industry including Mike Birbiglia\, Jim Breuer\, and Lewis Black. He’s been a contributing writer to NBC’s “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and “ABC’s Politically Incorrect”. He’s a frequent guest on the nationally syndicated “Bob and Tom Show” and often appears on the roster for their “Friends of The Bob and Tom Show” comedy tour. He has a DryBar Comedy Special called “Further Along than Anyone Expected” with over 1 million views. At the age of 49\, Dave became a Paid-On-Call Firefighter with Grand Rapids Township Fire Department and at the age of 53\, became a Full-Time firefighter with that same department. In November of 2021\, he had the honor of being a presenter at the prestigious TEDx Detroit event where he spoke about his careers in both comedy and the fire service.\n\nNardos Osterhart has been doing standup since 2012 and won the Funniest Person in Grand Rapids contest in 2013. She’s produced two successful one woman shows\, and an album called ‘Nice Try’ in 2019 that hit number one on iTunes. It can be heard on Sirius XM and Spotify. Her humor highlights the absurdities of everyday life\, memories from the past\, and parenting fails. The film also features a star-studded ensemble cast including Dom DeLuise\, Marty Feldman\, and Sid Caesar\, along with cameos by Burt Reynolds and Paul Newman. “Silent Movie” will be accompanied by organist Andrew Rogers on the GRPM’s Mighty Wurlitzer Theater Organ.\n\nLaughFest: Silent Film & Organ Concert will open their doors and cash bar at 6 p.m. with the shows beginning at 7 p.m.\n\nTickets are $25\, with a reduced price of $20 each for GRPM members. Tickets are available now at tickets.grpm.org/events.\n\nAndrew Rogers serves the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor as Head Organist\, and has performed there for over ten years. Previously\, he served on staff at the Detroit Fox. Residing in Fenton\, Mi.\, he travels widely accompanying silent films\, lecturing on film scoring\, and concerts. He changed his focus entirely to music after leaving behind two other jobs: 17 years at a travel agency doing back-office accounting and 30 years of serving as an Orthodox priest. Andrew’s musical studies began with the accordion – winning local and national competitions – by playing transcriptions of classical orchestral music. He later appeared in the orchestra for productions of the Theater Department at Michigan State University where he holds his degree with honors in Psychology.

DESCRIPTION:-Meet in front of (or just inside the front door) City Built Brewing Co. \n-Two group run start times- 5:30p & 6:30p (run with one or both). We do leave right on time\, so be sure to arrive early to find parking on any of the side streets (FYI- the meters do run until 6pm). \n-Both groups do the same route and wait at the top of each hill before moving on to the next hill so the group can stay together. \n-Full route is just under 5 miles but you can cut it shorter by staying at the tops of the hills or cutting the hills in half. \n-Please wear lights and reflective gear. The streets are not closed and there are many vehicles on the road. \n-Bring a warm change of clothes for after the run
