SUMMARY:Gold Coast's 8th Annual Diaper Drive with Nestlings Diaper Bank & Great Start Parent Coalition
DESCRIPTION:Gold Coast Doulas is holding our 8th annual Diaper Drive from September 1st to October 1st\, 2023. Giving back is an important foundation of our business as a Certified B Corporation; clean diapers make a significant impact on the health of new families and our giving focus is on supporting low-income women and children.\n\nOne in two U.S. families with young children struggle to afford diapers and no government programs currently provide them. This rate increased from one in three in past years. Food\, shelter\, and utilities are the only items covered by assistance. Diapers are expensive and many families make tough choices between paying rent and utilities or buying diapers. Research shows that 48% of parents delay changing diapers and 32% report re-using diapers to make supplies last longer.\n\nThe Gold Coast Doulas diaper drive coincides with National Diaper Need Awareness Week\, September 18th – Sept 24th. Diaper Need Awareness Week is an initiative of the National Diaper Bank Network (NDBN)\, created to make a difference in the lives of the nearly 5.2 million babies in the United States aged three or younger who live in poor or low-income families. Our annual diaper drive benefits Nestlings Diaper Bank of West Michigan and Great Start Parent Coalition of Kent County. Holland-based Nestlings has distributed over 2 million diapers and helped over 50\,000 families since 2011. Nestlings Diaper Bank also works with 31 partner agencies to distribute the diapers to the families in need.\n\nOur goal is to collect 10\,000 diapers to support families in need in Kent\, Ottawa\, and Allegan counties to celebrate our 8th anniversary. We collect opened and unopened boxes and packages of new disposable diapers\, used cloth diapers and cloth supplies\, new cloth diapers\, and new boxes or packages of wipes. We need your help to make this happen.\n\nDiaper donations will be accepted from September 1 to October 1st at the following partnered drop-off locations:\nIn Zeeland:\nHoward Miller Library 14 S. SUMMARY:Michigan Radio Reads Book Club Discussion - "Firekeeper's Daughter"
DESCRIPTION:Our Grand Rapids store is honored to have been chosen as the location for the next gathering of the Michigan Radio Reads book club on October 4 to discuss Firekeeper’s Daughter joined by the book’s author\, Angeline Boulley! Can’t make it to the store? Take part in the discussion online. And watch our social media channels for a book giveaway! Register now to save your place. \nThis event is free to attend. However it helps us in planning to receive your RSVP. Please register here so we know you plan to join us: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/michigan-radio-reads-book-club-discussion-firekeepers-daughter-tickets-705433349137 \nAbout the Book:\nEighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in\, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college\, but when family tragedy strikes\, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie\, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team. \nYet even as Daunis falls for Jamie\, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder\, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug. \nReluctantly\, Daunis agrees to go undercover\, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined\, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time\, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims. \nNow\, as the deceptions—and deaths—keep growing\, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she’ll go for her community\, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known. \n  \nAbout the Author:\nAngeline Boulley\, an enrolled member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians\, is a storyteller who writes about her Ojibwe community in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. She is a former Director of the Office of Indian Education at the U.S. Department of Education. Angeline lives in southwest Michigan\, but her home will always be on Sugar Island. Firekeeper’s Daughter is her debut novel.

SUMMARY:Chicken Wire Empire with Golden Shoals
DESCRIPTION:What’s that? Chicken Wire Empire will be playing LIVE at the Ore Dock Brewing Co?!\n\n2019 saw a unique musical pairing on the European stage when Chicken Wire Empire and Golden Shoals combined for the Bluegrass Jamboree\, a 23 show tour across Germany. This meeting of musical minds showed to be an electrifying pairing\, delighting fans across the continent with timeless melodies and unforgettable performances\, some of which were chronicled on Chicken Wire Empire’s Live From Deutschland Volumes I and II\, available on all streaming platforms. Now\, three years later\, the two bands reunite for a string of shows across Michigan and Wisconsin this fall.\n\nChicken Wire Empire: Since their formation in 2014\, Chicken Wire Empire has captivated audiences around the world with their distinct brand of bluegrass and intricate bridging of traditional and modern acoustic sounds. Their high energy shows are ever-evolving\, with new music constantly woven into the setlist and improvisational jams leading listeners in new directions with every performance. The band’s ability to cohesively improvise through complex arrangements is a testament to their virtuosic musicianship and years of experience playing together. Fans of bluegrass\, jamgrass\, and Americana music alike will appreciate Chicken Wire Empire’s innovative approach to the genre and can expect a dynamic and relentlessly engaging listening experience.\nwww.chickenwireempire.com\n\nGolden Shoals: For Amy Alvey and Mark Kilianski\, the emergence of a brand new self-titled album also marks a rebirth of sorts for their band\, Golden Shoals. Eight years ago\, the duo was formed for a very unique performance project\, called “The Massachusetts Walking Tour”\, on which they hiked 6-12 miles per day with packs and instruments\, and played shows each night for two weeks. The two semi-nomadic musicians\, who have called Asheville\, Boston\, and various moving vehicles home for the past eight years\, have grown individually and as a unit\, yet continue to find musical fulfillment in their collaboration. They now call Nashville\, Tennessee their home base. Initially brought together by a mutual love of American folk music\, their sound has expanded to include country\, Americana\, Indie and Experimental influences\, allowing them to move more freely beyond genre boundaries with their songwriting while still emanating a deep understanding of Old-Time and Bluegrass music. Ever inspired by the enduring spirit of traditional Appalachian mountain music\, their songwriting comes across as simple\, honest\, and fresh to the ears. The listener can expect the polished technique of conservatory training\, in tandem with the grit\, drive\, and soul of musicians like Roscoe Holcomb or Ola Belle Reed.\nwww.goldenshoals.com
